Lachrimae

(2011)   for chamber orchestra

Lachrimae is based on John Dowland’s pavane of the same name and was written in 2011 as part of The Sage Gateshead’s ‘Old Meets New’ project, which a number of composers wrote new works based on music of the past. My Lachrimae ebbs and flows between close references to Dowland’s melancholic piece and motoric chains of action which are further removed from the character and content of the pavane.

This is an extract of the opening of the piece:

Performed by Northern Sinfonia, 10 February 2010, The Sage Gateshead, Gateshead.
