Fractured Moulds, Scattered Signals
(2014) for 9 piece ensemble
This composition uses strategies which shift and re-orientate the group dynamic through different means of rhythmic coordination, without a conductor. The players weave between stomping patterns and webs of game-like cueing systems, mediated by a score which requires the players to change the way they communicate with each other in each section of the piece, mixing instructional games along with graphical and stave notation.
This piece was written during my residency with LSO Soundhub, and was composed for a group of 9 musicians who responded to an open call to take part in this project. These musicians participated in a series of workshops I led between October to December 2013 at LSO St Luke’s; Fractured Moulds, Scattered Signals experiments with ideas that we explored during these sessions.
Fractured Moulds, Scattered Signals was premiered on 28 June 2014 at LSO St Luke’s, London. The piece was performed by Renzo Spiteri, Michael Speers, Marcus Somerville, Alonso Garrigues Muñoz, Katerina Perdikomati, Mārtiņš Baumanis, Della Angelina, Mela Boev & Laurel S. Pardue.
