Clutch was composed for Galvanize Ensemble, as part of pianist Kate Halsall’s project Happenstance. The performers hurtle through a series of repetitive loops, which are notated in various ways, calling for the players to change the way they coordinate the patterns with each other in different sections of the piece. This ranges from chunky rhythms to improvised loop-based ideas, and cueing relays.
Clutch was first performed on 8th November 2014 at Light Vessel 21 on Gillingham Pier, Kent. The piece can be adapted for different instrumentation; at this event the performers included Galvanize’s Joel Bell (e.guitar), Sarah Dacey (voice), Kate Halsall (piano), Phil Maguire (electronics), feat. Genevieve Wilkins (percussion.) and Jennifer Allum (violin).
