Helen Papaioannou is a composer and baritone/tenor saxophonist based in Bristol, UK. Her work moves between strategies for ensemble interaction, fully notated music, and improvisation. Helen’s recent works explore shaping performers’ rhythmic communication and coordination around games, involving her in the role of composer and improviser in various combinations.
Helen grew up in Leeds, and studied for her PhD at Newcastle University under the guidance of Agustín Fernández and Will Edmondes. Performances of her work have involved collaborations with Nieuw Ensemble, Ensemble neoN w/Ryan Muncy & Pat Swoboda, Galvanize Ensemble, Kate Halsall and Fumiko Miyachi, Renzo Spiteri, Michael Speers, Northern Sinfonia, LSO, Henrik Frisk and Stefan Östersjö, Hannabiell Sanders, Alessandro Altavilla, Notos Quartet and the Busch Ensemble.
