Helen Papaioannou is a composer and baritone/alto saxophonist based in Sheffield, UK. Her work moves between strategies for ensemble interaction, notated music, and improvisation.

Helen grew up in Leeds, and studied for her PhD at Newcastle University under the guidance of Agustín Fernández and Will Edmondes. Performances of her work have involved collaborations with Nieuw Ensemble, Ensemble neoN w/Ryan Muncy & Pat Swoboda, Workers Union Ensemble, Galvanize Ensemble, Kate Halsall and Fumiko Miyachi, Renzo Spiteri, Michael Speers, Northern Sinfonia, LSO, Henrik Frisk and Stefan Östersjö, Hannabiell Sanders and Alessandro Altavilla.

Helen performs in a number of collaborations, including Beauty Pageant (w/ Marie Thompson + Dan Dixon), HOKKETT (w/Tina Hitchens + Yvonna Magda) and PonPon (w./ Agathe Max + Yoshino Shigihara). She has performed at Supersonic Festival (KUROMAGA), Supernormal festival (PonPon), Trans Pecos (MATA Festival, NYC) and Edinburgh International Festival and she has performed with Damo Suzuki, Euegene Chadbourne, Ryan Muncy and Valentina Magaletti.

Helen also leads music workshops in a variety of educational settings.
